Excel Tips

OK, I currently only have level 1 Microsoft Excel certification.

However, I have used it for a long time for things ranging from hours worked by employees, then converted into decimal time for entry into BrightPay, to use in a university mathematics module as I find it more accessible than even a calculator application in Windows. I hope you find some of the below spreadsheets useful. Either way, drop me a message!

As an employer of support workers via Direct Payments, I did not want to use a payroll service as I don’t feel easy about sending employee’s details to somebody I don’t know, especially because of GDPR. Instead I use my smartphone to record what times staff arrive and leave, Excel to calculate the durations worked and convert them into decimal time, then into BrightPay which runs the payroll for me. This means that a 5 hour and 45 minuite shift would be represented as 5.75 as 45 minutes is three quaters of an hour, and three quaters of 100 is 75. Basically this is converting sexagesimal (base-60) numbers to decimal (base-10)

Exponents e.g. 162 (16 squared)

If you need to work out exponents on a regular basis its quicker to use Excel so you can just change one number or add more rows or columns of calculations. This spreadsheet shows how to use ^ symbol to calculate as many exponents as you want!

I am going to be adding other Excel spreadsheets, but if you want a spreadsheet to do a particular thing, drop me a line and I will do my best to upload one!
